Why custom learning plans?

For all of its benefits, public education has a fatal flaw: it fails to address each student's learning in an individualized way. Students are grouped by age, and for the most part, the curriculum they are taught is predetermined. This leaves gifted and struggling students without the skills they need to reach their potential. At Family First, each client is given a custom learning plan to address their challenges and maximize their strengths.

My child is just not understanding math. Should I do something now or wait it out?

Even though children with disorders in math are clearly included in the definition of learning disabilities, referrals for evaluation for math learning difficulties in children are relatively uncommon. Many school systems base their provision of special education services almost entirely on the reading difficulties of the students. Math learning difficulties are common, significant, and deserving of serious instructional attention. Students with unaddressed disabilities may withdraw their effort, develop low self-esteem, and engage in avoidance tactics in response to repeated failure. Significant math deficiencies can also have negative effects on future job prospects, promotion opportunities, and day-to-day life management. Also, each new mathematical concept requires mastery of previously learned concepts to understand. This is why it is important to address any mathematical difficulties as early as possible to ensure success.

My child has been diagnosed with ADHD can you help?

Absolutely! ADHD is often very confusing to those without the disorder. Furthermore, success often requires counter-intuitive approaches to improve learning and executive function abilities. Our consultants have worked with students with ADHD to ensure long-term success!
